Appel was born in Amsterdam in 1921 and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam from 1940-1943. He had his first one-man exhibition in 1949 when he showed with the “CoBrA” group (initials of the members’ home cities: Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam) at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Since then he has had one-man shows, including three retrospectives in New York, Amsterdam, Boston, London, Milan, Paris, San Fransisco and Tokyo. He has taken part in over 150 group shows throughout the world, including the Sao Paulo Biennale, the Venice Biennale, Kassel’s Documenta III, the Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim Museum in New York.
