Juan Sanchez
American, 1954 -
Juan Sánchez is one of the most influential Nuyorican artists who came to prominence alongside a generation of LatinX artists working in New York in the 1980s and 1990s such as Coco Fusco, Guillermo GómezPeña, and Pepón Osorio. Sanchez creates mixed-media collages that combine photography, painting, media clippings, and found objects. Exploring questions of ethnic, racial, and national identity, Sánchez’s work draws from his personal history and addresses the U.S. occupation of his parents’ homeland and the bifurcated life of Puerto Ricans in America.
