American, born San Antonio, Texas, 1964
Jill Mathis studied photography at the University of Texas in San Antonio and Austin. After living in New York City and working as the full-time assistant to photographer Ralph Gibson, she moved to Italy. Mathis merges traditional landscape photography with pared-down text. By fusing conflicting messages within her images, she calls into question our relationship with the world we inhabit.
Mathis's work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; International Center of Photography, New York; Brooklyn Museum, New York; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, California.
